Resolution Against Iran’s Nuclear Capability

Whereas the Rabbinical Assembly has passed numerous resolutions (2007, 2008, 2010, 2012, and 2013) as well as having made public statements (2015 about the Canadian Government as well as one about the US Government) regarding Iran as a nuclear threat;

Whereas the Rabbinical Assembly has passed numerous resolutions (2012, 20122014, 2019, and 2020) repeatedly calling our members to advocate, strengthen, and care for the poor and vulnerable;

Whereas the new United States administration has indicated their intention to re-enter the JCPOA (also known as the Iran Nuclear Deal), it is imperative to understand that Iran declared its intent to abrogate the agreement’s terms on February 23, 2021;

Whereas Iran’s pursuit of a nuclear weapon destabilizes the security of the Middle East, endangers the security of the State of Israel, and increases the threat of nuclear attack worldwide;

Whereas the Islamic Republic of Iran is known to be a major source of state-sponsored terrorism, has tested a new missile that threatens the entire region, openly calls for the destruction of Israel, and is very close to creating a bomb that could bring its stated mission into reality;

Whereas Iran’s leaders have frequently denied and mocked the memory of the Shoah;

Whereas international sanctions have thus far not deterred Iran’s nuclear ambitions; and as such, has left its own people in a state of penury,

Therefore be it resolved that the Rabbinical Assembly condemn Iran for trying to build a nuclear weapon and call upon the President and Congress of the United States, the Prime Minister and Parliament of Canada, and governmental officials of all nations of the international community especially where Rabbinical Assembly members reside, to use every effort to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear capability; and

Be it further resolved that the Rabbinical Assembly insist that the international community demand that Iran should cease threatening the destruction of the State of Israel; and

Be it further resolved that the Rabbinical Assembly call upon the United States to re-enter the JCPOA only with the strong intent to enforce the agreement through all available means, including diplomacy, economic sanctions, and the credible threat of force.  When it is determined sanctions can be lifted, they should be lifted gradually, and ensure the money should be used only for the economic betterment of the Iranian people and not for nuclear armament or a campaign of global terror; and

Be it further resolved that the Rabbinical Assembly ask its members worldwide to call upon their respective governments to act in global concert to counter the threat of a nuclear Iran.
