NEW YORK, NY (February 27, 2023) In response to growing tensions and the recent escalation of violence in Israel, the Rabbinical Assembly (RA), the international association of Conservative/Masorti rabbis, issued the following statement: "The Rabbinical Assembly is deeply saddened by the recent events in Israel. We are in pain and join the condolences to the families of those killed, among them the Yaniv family and the Al-Aqatsch family and wish a speedy and full recovery to all who were injured. At this moment of deep sorrow over incomprehensible killings, we must do what we can to promote goodness in the world, just as Esti Yaniv, the mother of Hallel and Yagel, has called on us to do.
"We continue to insist that every person must decide between right and wrong on a daily basis, and that it is a commandment to choose life. Our tradition as we know it does not grant the right to harm innocent people or their property. Committed to Zionism and the State of Israel, we are deeply disturbed by the acts of terror, vandalism and violence supposedly carried out in the name of Israel or of God. These actions both harm Jewish sovereignty and constitute a danger to the existence of the Jewish State.
"We expect our government, the IDF, and the police, to act to prevent harm to people and to property, and to try any person who has chosen to harm another person. The Holy One created all of humanity in the Divine Image, and every person must act to increase the Divine Presence in our world. May Hashem grant strength to Hashem’s people; may Hashem bless Hashem’s people with peace.
כנסת הרבנים מרכינה ראש ואבלה נוכח אירועי היממה האחרונה בישראל. אנו כואבים ומשתתפים בצערן של משפחות ההרוגים ובתוכן משפחת יניב ומשפחת אל-אקטש ומאחלים רפואה והחלמה לכל הפצועים והנפגעים. ברגעים אלו של צער נורא על מוות והרג שאינם ניתנים להבנה, ראוי שנפעל מתוך שאיפה להוסיף רק טוב בעולם, ממש כפי שביקשה האם של האחים הלל ויגל שנרצחו אמש.
אנו חוזרים ומדגישים כי האדם עומד מידי יום בפני בחירה בין הטוב לרע והוא מצווה לבחור בחיים. אין במסורת היהודית, כפי שאנו לומדים אותה, רשות לפגוע בחפים מפשע ורכושם.
כמי שמחויבים לציונות ולמדינת ישראל אנו רואים בחומרה פעולות נפשעות של טרור, ונדליזם והפעלת כח, כאילו בשם המדינה או בשם האל.
פעולות אלו הן פגיעה בריבונות היהודית והם סכנה לקיומה של המדינה היהודית. אנו מצפים מן המדינה להפעיל את זרועותיה, הצבא והמשטרה באופן הראוי על מנת למנוע פגיעה בחיי אדם וברכוש, ולהביא לדין את כל מי שבוחר לפגוע באדם אחר. הקב״ה ברא את האדם בצלמו ועל האדם לפעול כדי להרבות את נוכחות ה' בעולם. ה' עוז לעמו יתן ה' יברך את עמו בשלום.
