In the first millennium, many prayers were written for the evening of the New Year, but over time they fell out of favor. This new section, dedicating the new year, addresses a felt need to reflect on the year that is beginning: to celebrate the world that God has given us, consider our human vulnerability and fallibility and devote ourselves to those matters that we know should have prominence in our lives.
